CERT Basic Training (Class 199)

CERT Basic Training is an 8 session course teaching you how to respond to major emergencies when first responders may be delayed. It teaches you to be prepared and provide life-saving care for victims, and prepares you to be a knowledgeable asset during major emergencies. It also teaches you how to put out small fires before they become big ones, and how to assess damaged structures to ensure they are safe to search.

Dates: the course is twice a week for 3 weeks: 23 Jan to 13 Feb 2025, 5 pm to 8:30 pm, at:
Sully Community Center (Senior Room)
13800 Wall Rd, Herndon, VA 20170.
A Final Exercise and graduation will be on Feb 15 at the Fire & Rescue Academy.

Prerequisites: There are 3 prerequisites:
1. Prior to registering for the course, please create an account in this system at Interested in CERT This allows you access to additional FREE CERT-trained only opportunities and allow us to document your volunteer hours.
2. Register for a FEMA Student ID (FEMA SID). This is required to take the online course below.
3. Complete FEMA online course IS-317 “Introduction to Community Emergency Response Team” and bring your completion certificate with you to the first class or email it to Training@FairfaxCountyCERT.org in advance. If you have difficulties with the final test for this short 2-hour course, please call Robby for assistance before you give up.

Graduation: Trainees must attend 6 of 7 sessions, and the Final Exercise, in order to graduate. You must attend Sessions 4 (Med I), 5 (LSAR), and 6 (MED II), or make up those classes, if missed, before graduating. Given the times of this course the opportunity to make up a session before graduation will be very limited. However, anyone missing a session has up to 2 classes, or 6 months, whichever occurs first, to make up missed sessions and complete the requirements for graduation.

CERT Gear: The CERT program provides Trainees with a backpack with basic response PPE, a Participant Manual and Trainee folder.

Age: 18 years or older, 17 & 16 with written parental permission (Fairfax County Hold Harmless Form), and 15 to 13 with adult guardian participation in the class.

Individuals with physical challenges will be accommodated as much as practical.
